    Baclofen Infusion Pump

Baclofen Infusion Pump is one of the commonly used methods in the treatment of spasticity.

Spasticity occurs because of damage in nerves in the brain or spinal cord that are related with muscle movements. It is characterised by an imbalance between the stimulating and suppressive mechanisms in the spinal cord. Spasticity triggered by motion, causes an extensive increase in the muscle tension reflexes. Spasticity causes muscle hardness, unintentional contractions, spasms, and pain. Baclofen Infusion Pump is helpful to decrease and control these complaints.

    What is Baclofen Infusion Pump?

Baclofen is a muscle relaxant medicine. It is used to decrease the spasticity occurring in Multiple Sclerosis (MS), spinal cord injuries, and various neurological diseases. Baclofen Pump is a system that directly conveys this medicine in the spinal cord.
Baclofen Pump consists of a catheter and a pump that enables intrathecal drug transport. The pump is a small round shaped, metallic disc. The drug is stored in the pump and transferred in the spinal cord automatically at the desired amount.
One of the advantages of the Baclofen Pump is that the drug can be reloaded when the amount stored in the pump is all used. The life span of the battery that operates the pump is 5-7 years and the battery can be replaced afterwards.

    How is it Applied?

Baclofen pump is applied under the operation room conditions. First the exact place of application is determined by fluoroscopy. Then under local anaesthesia, a 1 cm incision is made in the abdomen and the catheter is placed in the spinal canal through this incision. The next step is to make a 3 cm incision in the abdomen to place the pump. Then the catheter and the pump are connected. The operation is terminated by suturing the incisions.

Whom it Can Be Applied to?

Baclofen pump is applied in patients with severe spasticity that disturbs the life quality. Furthermore, patients having severe pain that cannot be controlled by the conventional methods can benefit from Baclofen Pump that delivers morphine into the spinal cord liquid.
Baclofen Pump is not applied to a patient who has infection, uses anticoagulant or is pregnant.
